I don't post nearly as often as I should. I often think of things I'd like to post, but then never do because it feels like it takes too much to login and type out, then format and proofread, then collect associated images and post them, etc...

So maybe a format similar to Tumblr would be better for me; it's definitely something I'm looking into. So on to the post.

I really enjoy hypnosis and the relaxing benefits it provides. I don't know if I really believe all the stage hypnosis quick inductions, and how people just fall over asleep, but it's interesting to think about. Usually as I'm laying down to sleep, I give myself some items to concentrate on. I take a few deep breaths, try to calm my rampantly raging ADHD thoughts, and then I either plant seeds of relaxation or attraction. Last night, I felt particularly clever when I came up with the phrase (which I repeated several times): "You'll now experience the most healing, rejuvenating, refreshing, and energizing rest and relaxation you've ever had. EVERY CELL in your ENTIRE BODY will be completely healed, rejuvenated, refreshed, and energized." I'd have to say it worked pretty well, I passed out quickly and woke up only 8.5 hours later, full of energy. As a side note, I can easily sleep 12 hours every night, and I've been that way since I can remember. I once slept 17 hours straight through. I can survive off 8 hours a night as long as I can sleep in at least once a week.

"Ok, enough about me, let's talk about you for a minute. Enough about you, let's talk about life for a while."

My thoughts on THE Law of Attraction: I don't know. I often wonder if people who become successful using The Secret, are much like those who become successful without it: something clicks in their subconscious that causes them to take and make actions that they aren't fully aware of. They can try to teach others, in good faith, but will never be able to fully describe to anyone, a truly 100% effective system for achieving what they themselves have now attained. They, in their conscious mind, are actually unaware of the true reason(s) for why and how it worked for them.

Honestly, I'm trying to wrap my head around all the aspects of positive thinking and feeling, in order to attract more abundance and wealth in my life, but I guess it's just not "clicking" for me. Maybe it's not my time, or maybe I'm just not doing something right. I might have blocks I can't find, hidden and preventing me from success. Or maybe it has something to do with what Wallace D. Wattles alludes to, when in "The Science of Getting Rich," he says something to the effect that "sustained thought is the hardest task any human will ever undertake," which is especially true for those scatterbrained individuals such as myself. If my brain isn't going 7 directions at once, I'm probably dead. I know the benefits of focus, it just really is super difficult for me to accomplish.

I've been interested in and experimenting with hypnosis and auras for at least 6 years now. I had an epiphanic thought this morning about getting rich using The Law of Attraction and Auras, and I'll share that with you now:
"Surround yourself with a "money aura" so that when you are anywhere near money, it will be attracted to you by the law of "like attracts like." Imagine money and expensive objects floating in an invisible field surrounding you. The larger the aura and the more densely filled it is, the more magnified the magnetic effect will be."

Jeff Haas Mazda - General(ly Specific) Complaint(s)

I've really been thinking about how I don't post here anymore, which I follow by saying I've been considering turning this blog into a complaint log. It almost seems like I'm always complaining about something. I don't do it for any personal gain though; I do it to warn you. I search for an appropriate outlet to lodge my complaint without having to sign up for some site that will sell my information to some advertising company (yet another thing I'd have to complain about!) and usually wind up empty handed and anger-ful (you like how I did that?). So I wind up here again, and that is the extremely long-winded intro to my rant about the Jeff Haas Mazda dealership in Houston, TX.

I know dealerships are scummy, with all the (usually unethical) tactics they employ, but I at least expect them to carry their operations out in a friendly demeanor. I'm 99.99% certain I'd never been yelled at by an employee at a dealership, until this visit. The smug, angry financial manager was only part of the complaint though. The way the deal was handled overall, led something to be desired. I'll admit, I've been listening to some best negotiation practices MP3's by several authors (some of my favorites are by Roger Dawson) so I guess I was expecting a more congenial showdown (or no showdown at all!). Fisher, Ury, and Patton talk about the angry negotiator, and I have since learned better how to deal with someone like that, but it was a surprise at the time to have someone in that state of mind at a place where you kind of expect to get your butt kissed a little. Anyway, on to the story!

We found a car we wanted through Yahoo Autos and emailed the internet salesman with our interest and terms. We told him we need to be between a certain price range and we don't have (or want to put down) a down payment. We do have a trade-in but it is slightly "upside down" financially. Carl Scott, the salesman responded kindly saying he definitely felt he could get us in our range pending credit approval. "Great," we thought and quickly headed there on our first day off together (Saturday). We set up an appointment but of course we had to wait on Carl when we got there. He was very friendly at least, and didn't pressure us on anything. He brought us back a list of figures that were still out of our price range, but he said that the finance manager could work with us on the numbers and that the figures on the paper were just estimates. We can handle that, and we just assume that this dealership works a little different than others where you do most of your bargaining with the salesman before you get to finance.

So we wait. They have a small room with 1 TV on CNN or some other news station where all they play are commercials and disturbing international news. I'll refer to it as "The Holding Cell."

Thirty minutes later: we are greeted by the finance manager Kortney Malito.

As an aside, I've done some searching on him to see if others have complained, and he is apparently some kind of Master Level Business Manager according to "The Automotive Training Academy." I guess he just had to pass the "5 day training course" to be classified in this "distinguished" manner, because it surely has nothing to do with his cordial and ethical business practices (non-existent).

Mr. Mal(d)ito immediately became irate that we weren't taking the deal he had weaved, which was clearly (although only by a small margin) outside of our agreed upon price range. "That's just semantics," he raved. Really? According to Merriam-Webster semantics doesn't mean "untrue," it means the study of words and how they change through history. Does this mean the Automotive Training Academy doesn't teach definitions of useful terms? Maybe "Master Level" means: "you sell cars real good - even if you have to bully a couple people (or everyone) to meet your forecasts."

But I digress.

I don't know if there really was some misinformation provided by Mr. Scott, or if Mr. Malito was just using psychological warfare, but he actually had to call Scott into the room to clarify what the original agreement had been. Malito had an angry tone most of the time, especially when I brought up any kind of bargaining stance. He basically yelled at me when I mentioned the dealership's "documentation fee" as a point of discontent. I stated that it was not required by the state of Texas, as I had previously learned, but he wasn't hearing any of that! He quickly shot his chair around to grab previous documents, stating that Jeff Haas has never (EVER) waived the fee, and that I would "kill the deal" if I made that an issue. I'm actually curious if bringing that number up, but being told that it would not be negotiated is illegal since the state does not require it and declares that it should be a number agreed upon by both parties (if you know, please shoot me a comment to inform me). Then he exclaimed that there was another couple waiting to buy the car and that there were other people waiting to get financing, so if I would just hurry up and sign the deal we could get moving.

And I'm running out of steam...

He broke me down with his tone and his (overkill) argumentative nature until I was just unwilling to keep trying for a fair deal. We were eventually actually inside of our price range, so I let it be and we bought the car.

"Sign here here here here here here here here here and here..." and the deal was done.

"Hand this (paper plate) to Mr. Scott and he will put it on the car for you."

I honestly don't even recall if he thanked us for buying the car because I was so sick to my stomach at that point. It didn't get any better when we got back to Scott and he handed us the key. Wait... the key?

"There's only one key?" We asked.

"Yep," was his only response.

This isn't just any key, this is a $156 "switchblade" programmable linking key. Great, another kick in the pants on the way out!

After all the dust settled and we were driving to show our friends and family the new purchase, it dawned on us that we had been totally distracted by all the numbers and attitude, that we completely forgot to ask for a Carfax report! DOH!! Of course to make it worse, the universe saw fit to show us literally 50 Carfax commercials that night while watching TV.

Maybe it just wasn't our day! The car is nice though.

I Used to Have a Website

So, I used to have a website. I paid for the registration, the hosting, the privacy protection (the whole nine yards). I spent weeks editing the layout, the links, the colors, the fonts, the "you name it." When it came time to renew, I just couldn't bring myself to fork out another couple hundred bucks. I have been working 50-60 hour weeks and didn't even think to try and sell the domain while it was still garnering traffic. In fact, the thought of trying to sell the site didn't hit me until months after letting it all expire. It was really a hassle anyway, and I obviously wasn't doing something right since I hadn't become a millionaire after running it for 2-3 years, so in my head I guess I figured I should just scrap the entire project and start over. Most of the links are here on the blog somewhere anyway, although much more scattered out. Most of the sites I was rep'ing have gone by the wayside since I started the site, so maybe it just wasn't meant to be. Back to the drawing board and on to the next one.

I'm posting this consumer alert due to recent absolutely disgusting customer service, including the inability to contact the company for several weeks (until after I filed a complaint with the BBB - suddenly they are knocking down my door with responses). I have decided to boycott the uniform and clothing distribution/manufacturing company UMI Direct, and I STRONGLY suggest you do the same!

Be aware that although UMIDirect.com claims on their website that they will respond to all contact requests "usually within a couple hours," they do not respond to anything submitted via their website nor email, unless you have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau first.

At first I was excited to find a company that had my jean size, however, I (not so) quickly learned that returning the items would cost me shipping (to multiple locations), as well as an unheard of, 20% return fee! Keep in mind, they have a very strict return acceptance policy that they do not disclose until they return the item BACK to you as a refused return.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE heed my warning, learn from my misfortune, and save yourself the time, money, headache, heartache, high blood pressure, and frustration that dealing with this company has caused me!

UMI Direct Inc. Uniforms Manufacturing - boycott them at all costs. Do NOT buy from this company unless you're a glutton for punishment. I would say it's terrible customer service, but mainly it's their LACK of customer service that is so horrible! Honestly, do NOT buy anything from them!

If you talk to anyone who is where they want to be today, someone somewhere along the way has told them in a cynical tone, "You just got lucky."

If you study these "lucky" people (it has been done) you'll find that most of them don't really believe in luck as many of us see it. They usually believe they can make their own "luck," or better, create their own lives. Just like it is stated in "The Science of Getting Rich," and by Robert Kiyosaki, it is pretty much a fact that you can make yourself lucky!

Another literal example can be found in the book by Richard Wiseman called "The Luck Factor." Inside, Wiseman (ironic name!) highlights four strategies of "lucky" people, and you'll find these strategies strewn throughout the web and literature when searching about creating your own luck. Here they are, quoted, for your perusing pleasure:

Never Use Yahoo(exclamation) - Unless It's Free(EXCLAMATION)

Yahoo! was founded as a company providing email addresses for free. That is what they are "good" at. Please heed my advice and DO NOT USE THEM FOR ANYTHING YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR! They have evolved into a conglomerate by necessity to try and retain market share because companies that do everything better (Google! - notice the exclamation mark) would have turned them into an old, dusty, internet ghost town otherwise.

I have come to this epiphany after a chain of 10 emails back-and-forth from Yahoo!'s "customer service" (the quotes because technically it's more of a cancellation department - they really don't have the capacity to handle anything other than helping you cancel your services, and no, you won't get a refund once they do), which left me feeling even ANGRIER and MORE FRUSTRATED than when I sent the original contact request, and still with NO RESOLUTION. You might already know this if you use Yahoo!, but if you didn't, there is really no good way to contact Yahoo! when you need to - I think it's because they know how bad their "customer service" department is, so they've made everything as "self-help" as possible. If you do take the time to weed through all the FAQ's and finally find the way to contact them, you'll be sorry you did.

You don't have to take my word for it (even though you should, to save yourself some headaches, heartaches, and wallet aches!), because Yahoo proudly displays this concept on their help pages, sort of like a war torn badge of honor - see below.

These are two of the top five questions asked by users; see if you notice a pattern emerging:

2) How do I contact Yahoo about taking more money out of my account than they were supposed to?
3) How do I contact Yahoo customer Service for a unauthorized bank transaction ?

Are you scared yet?

Even if Yahoo! did have and practice ethical business morals, their services are clearly inferior; if you've ever used "Yahoo! Search Marketing" as opposed to "Google Adwords" (I've used both because I had promotional codes from my website host) then you know exactly what I'm talking about. The very first day I used Google Adwords, I received results equivalent to a full week of Yahoo!'s knockoff. And I suppose it only makes sense, since Google was founded as a search provider, but they also do everything else better too.

Rather than try to explain the email chain, which bounced between me and Yahoo!'s outsourced service department, I have copied and pasted them (final email sent by me, no response received) below, because it really is amazing when you lay eyes on it. You'll start to see the redundancy and idiocy of their responses immediately, then again and again. The only editing I have done is remove my personal information. Sorry if the formatting doesn't come through very well.

Wow, you added absolutely nothing of value to the conversation. Did you even glance at the subject of the email, so clearly written "Yahoo! Private Domain Registration Charges?" All you did was copy/paste a ridiculously long explanation of domain service fees, further accentuating the point that your service in general is HORRIBLE! Either you know nothing about the services you offer, or you don't care. I'm pretty sure the copy/paste was not even relevant because I signed up for my account after the date specified, making all the information provided, null and void (did I already mention worthless?).

I would consider your response worse than a computer-generated bot response, because at least the bot would ask if it was close to addressing my concerns. Judging from your previous performance, I'll assume you are not understanding anything up to this point and so I'm going to stop wasting my time and energy typing this reply...

Sorry, wrong again. My original email contained no inquiries. I never once used a question mark or any phrase that could be considered a question, not even a rhetorical one, until the first robot attempted a response, at which point I began questioning a lot of things.

The main question remaining now is, "Honestly, are you even trying?"

Still not working, please refer to the next level higher than you, where I can reach someone who will actually read my original email (or any of the other three) and reply accordingly. I completely understand the charges and what they were for. I completely understand that you were able to charge my card. I don't need explanations for questions I never asked, and I certainly don't need you trying to push blame onto my credit card company. Again, just to reiterate, since it obviously isn't getting through, I HAVE NO QUESTIONS REGARDING THE CHARGES!

The reason I never got the email notifications is because they were never sent! Do you think it's some odd crazy alignment of stars or some insane conspiracy, which obviously occurred after the billings, that caused me to receive duplicate emails notifying me of the cancellations (one at my domain email, and one here) and also allowed me to receive every one of these absolutely pointless email correspondences but not one single instance of one of these alleged notifications?? NO, I'll let you in on a secret, it absolutely means you are mistaken and trying to make excuses instead of solutions.

Not that placing blame solves anything, but since that is the tactic you enlisted, I'll humor you and maybe help you out; it is my fault for ever doing business with Yahoo! for anything other than FREE (that's obviously what the company was built on, and possibly the only thing it does right - customer service not included!!).

Understood - You would rather cancel all my services and keep the money (just like the Private Domain Registration Charges) than appropriately handle the situation with good business ethics. I had no doubt that this would be the result from the beginning. Some companies have "retention" departments, apparently Yahoo! just has a cancellation department.

You seem to be the only ones who are confused. The email subject clearly states "Private Domain Registration," yet you continue to write about my domain name orders. I've repeatedly stated that I know exactly what the charges are, and what they are for.

I also know how you take the money (for the PRIVATE DOMAIN REGISTRATION) before the service has been rendered and without notice (even though one of the agents who responded in this email chain claimed a notice was supposed to have been sent), and then refuse to offer a refund.

I think I'll send Yahoo! executives a bill for consulting services, explaining how they could save potential billions every year by just getting completely rid of their current "customer service" departments, and replacing them with a system where issues are taken care of on the first contact.

"Oh great, just what I need to distract me while I'm driving, a telemarketer...But wait, that's strange, that's not my default ringtone for any type of call."

I quickly retrieve my phone from my side pocket to see that it is my significant other! Now something is really strange, because they have their own specific ring tone, which just happens to be "Chris Brown - With You" at the moment.
I answered and talked, but was perplexed about what was going on with my phone the whole time.

I started fiddling. Made sure profile is still set to "custom," CHECK. Made sure ring tone was still physically (electronically?) in the phone and not deleted by some random Windows Mobile 5 bug, CHECK. Tried to set personalized ringtone back to Chris Brown....SCREEEEEEEEeeeeAAAAAAAAAAAAEEEEEEEERRRRRrr (screeching halt)!

"ALERT - This ring tone file is corrupted or unavailable. Please choose a different ring tone."

I was a little upset at that point because corruption is never good, and this Samsung Smartphone has always been pretty buggy. At least it has worked for the major functions, even if it was with some little workaround every time (this is in reference to the alarm which can not be turned off and/or starts multiple instances of itself simultaneously, leaving the only good way to stop the alarm as turning the phone completely off and then hoping you remember to turn it back on later.)
Once I got home I did some checking online to see if others were experiencing the same effect. Of course there are no technical articles provided by Microsoft nor Samsung, two very large computer/electronics companies who know their products have issues, but there are several forum posts. From what I could find, the problem is not version specific to the Windows Mobile OS being used, both 5 and 6 apparently yielded the same issue. The only workaround I could find is a factory reset (format) of the phone, to bring it back to default settings in every way. "AAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHH," as Charlie Brown would say.

Then the plot thickens. It's not just ringtones. I can't play any of the media files on my phone, which leads me to believe it has something to do with Windows Media Player, but I'm not computer guru, so what do I know?

Before this happened, I was already in the (painfully slow) process of trying to sort through text messages I have received over the past year and a half, but now I can't save any of them. I was recommended one program, which did in fact allow for backing up SMS/MMS messages, but it wasn't compatible with the Samsung BJ II yet. The option in the forum posts was to use dashwire.com, a service which uses your phone's data connection (I don't have a data plan) to connect and upload all your phone settings so you can transfer most of them back to your phone once you've reset it (or lost it and get a new one, etc...). Of course I refuse to pay AT&T to upload a backup of my phone, for an issue caused by the phone I purchased from them...call me crazy! Finally, their phones are only covered up to one year from purchase, for defects and such, and I was never able to register the phone with Samsung because their website kept giving me the error that the SN was not valid (great, leave it up to Let's Talk to screw me again!).

As far as I'm concerned, BJ now stands for Buggy (or Broken) Junk!

If anyone knows of any solution, which doesn't involve me deleting all my personal files, please let me know - I may be stuck with this AT&T default ringtone for every sound my phone makes, for a while.

The Worst Airline in The World (Not Just the US)

This post is not merely a rant, nor is it slanderous, but rather it is a report of a horrible experience with US Airways. I will post the actual email sent to US Air and Travelocity's customer service email addresses, along with their responses. This is an honest complaint as well as a "BUYER BEWARE" alert! The copied contact form submissions are a little lengthy because we wanted to make sure the actual events were expressed as clearly as possible.

So it goes ...

The Original Customer Relations Email:

I am writing this letter to you, not as a gimmick to receive free vouchers or whatever it may be, but rather to inform you of a horrible experience that myself and three other individuals in my traveling party were subjected to as a result of booking our flights with US Air. Our
horrid experience began as soon as we checked our bags with the attendant inside Terminal A of Bush IAH in Houston, Texas on Thursday April 2, 2009.

As anticipated, there was a charge for our checked baggage (which is a common practice amongst airline carriers now). Call me crazy, however, I feel as though if I am going to pay $30.00 for two pieces of luggage to travel with me, the checked bag handling process sure as heck better exceed any of my previous notions of care under the old system (of not paying). Unfortunately this was not the case. I watched in disbelief as the clerk launched my bags from the check-in station face down onto the conveyor belt with little (actually no) regard for my belongings that I just paid $30 for on top of my ticket price. It is not that I had anything fragile packed away, it was just the fact that my property was being abused for no reason what so ever.

Being that we were going on vacation, we all shrugged the situation off and headed toward our departure gate. Upon glancing at our boarding passes, we were shocked to see that for both our departing flight into Phoenix and our connection into Honolulu all of our seating assignments had been changed from what we booked on Travelocity. [This subject will be revisited in detail shortly] So again we shrugged the situation off in the hopes or putting these inconveniences behind us.

Due to adverse weather in Houston that morning, we were delayed over 1 hour once we boarded the plane before takeoff [This of course is not being blamed on anyone, simply being added for a better understanding of the situation]. Since we only had a small window of time between flights (Houston to Phoenix and Phoenix to Honolulu) my girlfriend and I decided to page one of the flight attendants while we were still parked on the runway waiting in line to take off. We wanted to inquire about any connection info or later flights into Honolulu - Not a strange request of information I figured. Unfortunately, rather than receiving answers to our questions (or even getting to ask them) the young lady (all in one motion) turned off the service page light above our heads and simply said "We don't know anything about that yet" as she walked away. Need I remind you, I did not even ask a question! She simply saw that my girlfriend and I were frantically viewing our itinerary.

Well, thankfully, we did make it to our connecting flight simply because we all sprinted across the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport just minutes before the aircraft door was sealed (other people from our flight from Houston were not as fortunate). This time our seats were 30 rows behind where we initially selected upon booking! Not to mention that our group was completely separated. Oh well, on with the trip we figured.

Now, at this point (before our departure to Honolulu) we had already been up and traveling for over 4 hours off and on, and the flight to Honolulu would total out our travel time at over 10 hours. Naturally, at some point during a 10 hour span, one would eat. So, we planned on eating a light lunch on the plane during the flight to Honolulu (Since two meal choices and a snack choice were to be offered on the flight as advertised by both the flight attendant and the US Air Magazine). Bad decision! Being that my girlfriend and I were in row 30 (instead of row 5) of the Boeing 757-200 craft we eagerly anticipated our turn for the attendants to take our meal request. Much to our dismay, upon reaching row 24 the attendant with the (most sarcastic grin I have ever seen in my life) exclaimed, "Sorry, we are out of food!" as she (without hesitation) walked the cart to the back of the craft. I honestly thought the rear of the plane was going to revolt. Imagine that over 12 rows or people did not even get the option to eat! That's 12 rows at 6 people per row, 72 people! Wow, is that even possible? Even people that did get to enjoy a meal (our friends who we were supposed to be seated next to in the front) suffered from US Air's horrible service. They had to hold onto their trash for over three hours! When they asked an attendant to remove it so they could put their tray-table up, they were snapped with, "You're going to have to wait.", as the attendant kept walking past.

The airline industry is said to be struggling to stay afloat. I, having not worked in this particular industry, am simply speculating that the in-flight meals turn a profit - At $7 or $5 a pop, they would have to. Well just imagine that 2/3 of the people that did not get to eat were planning on it (like myself) that would roughly bring in an additional $332 of sales for that flight alone. Not to mention, satisfy the hunger of people traveling in your crafts. Shouldn't the flight attendant have
been trained or have enough wherewithal to genuinely apologize and offer an alternative, maybe an additional soda or something rather than just disappear?

Well, we finally make it to Hawaii and had a great time, all the while dreading having to travel with US Air on the return flight. So, Sunday April 5, 2009 we make it out to the airport expecting the worst.

Sure as the sun rises, we got it again! This time our travel group's seating arrangements were so screwed up, at times on our trip home we wouldn't even be sitting with our significant others! (Did I fail to mention we booked and reserved our seats over 2 months in advance?) So, naturally at the check-in kiosk we attempt to change our seats using the interactive flight manifest, so that we could at least be in the same vicinity of each other. Now please explain to me why some seats in the
coach section of the plane cost an additional $25 or $10 to occupy? Is it just a gimmick to get some fast cash? I already explained how you can do it legitimately through food sales or is the state of your company so bad you need to squeeze your customers in every direction possible for their hard-earned money? [Honestly, I still don't know why those seats cost more, even the attendant couldn't tell me.]

We attempted to ask the check-in clerk if there was any way to waive those fees so we could sit next to each other, and as expected, she was of no use. In fact she argued with us that this whole situation was our fault for booking online and attempted to downplay the whole situation.

Well thinking back, she was right about something, this entire situation actually was our fault, we were the ones that selected US Air in the first place.

I'm sure you can imagine the rest. Thankfully we made it home to Houston and our luggage made it too. I have no grievances with the pilots or complaints about the act of flying, except to mention that each time we boarded one of the dilapidated vessels operated by US Air I was not only horrified to see that it was left rancid and filthy from the flight before us, but also amazed that the craft could actually fly. I kid you not when I say that the craft which carried us from Honolulu to Phoenix had a hole in the cabin veneer the size of a golf ball and two others just like it covered with painted duct tape on row 14 by seat F! If that was the inside of the plane that people can actually see, I would hate to see what is not in view.

In an effort to keep this letter to a tolerable minimum, I will allow you fill in the blanks as far as how my travel experiences with US Air were. I seriously hope to never fly with you again (as do the other 3 members of our group). Sadistically enough, I genuinely hope that others will follow suit until you learn to value and respect the individuals that pay your bills - or simply go out of business. In a day and age where people are restructuring their priorities in life and stretching their incomes, one would think a company such as this one would do everything possible to create loyal customers and really "wow" them with your service and care, yet you seem to do the exact opposite - But what do I know? Oddly enough, it did not seem to be just me or our group, as we witnessed other passengers demanding to speak with supervisors and watched as the customer service line inside of Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport grew and remained at over seventeen seemingly angry passengers in the course of an hour. We would have spoken with a US Air representative the morning of the 6th; however she yawned as we approached her and rolled her eyes, so I didn't even bother.

Like I stated earlier, I am not looking for anything and I would be surprised if this letter ever gets read other than an email server just sending me an auto-reply in the standard form, but who knows.

So there you have it. Hopefully you were able to read through the entire account so that you could form a clear picture of what we endured. He didn't even mention the part about how the steward of our return flight from Honolulu to Phoenix (the long one!) allowed two people to move forward from the rear to sit next to us (one beside each group) without asking if it was OK with us. Normally I wouldn't mind too much, and probably would have said "Sure." if he HAD asked, but he didn't, and the two individuals just happened to be rude and disrespectful. My first impression of the person moved to sit next to me was shattered by her slinging her sweaters and carry-on luggage (3 pieces!?) into the seat, hitting me in the arm several times, yet never bothering to say so much as "Hi," or "Sorry," before settling in and falling fast asleep. The male moved to sit next to our companions, had a very similar attitude but unfortunately enough for them, he had the added "benefit" of reeking of smoke, alcohol, and body odor. Of course, as he fell asleep, he naturally leaned towards them, and was a burden the entire flight.

Ah, it feels so good to get complaints off your chest and vent your frustrations, but I digress.

Travelocity was CC'd on the email for 3 reasons:
1) We used them to book the travel packages,
2) We figured they would want to know about and document US Airways' horrible service, possibly removing them from their search results, and
3) So that US Air might be moved towards an actual customer relation response, knowing that Travelocity would be watching.

The Results

Travelocity was the first to respond, and I don't have that actual email, but apparently they have issued my friend a $100 voucher for travel through their service for any time in the next 13 months. Not too shabby, or rather, a reasonable response from a company which didn't even really have any control over why we experienced what we did. So I would say I'm pleased with their return, and will probably use them again in the future when taking trips or booking vacations.

HOWEVER!

I DO have US Airways' reply, and it is just plain ridiculous! Here is the exact copy (with account info starred out) for your viewing and critiquing pleasure.

This part confuses me: "We appreciate and value your business. We're working hard to earn your continued patronage. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to do so."

How are they appreciating and valuing your business? By solely responding? How are they working hard to earn your continued patronage? By simply responding? He's right about you giving them the opportunity, but it appears they have done NOTHING with it!

How expected!!!

Please let me know your sizes. In the event that you too are strapped for the holidays with no extra money, I’ve included the instructions below if you'd like to make some yourself, instead of re-gifting the ones I make you.

How to make bedroom slippers out of maxi pads:
You'll need four maxi pads to make a pair.
Two of them get laid out flat, for the foot part.
The other two wrap around the toe area to form the top.
Tape or glue each side of the top pieces to the bottom of the foot part.

Decorate the tops with whatever you desire, Christmas decor or other cute things, depending on the time of year (money will probably still be tight at Easter!).

There are a couple reasons why the cameras were put into place, according to the houstontx.gov site:

"Red light running is the leading cause of urban crashes according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In 2004, more than 900 people were killed and an estimated 168,000 were injured in crashes that involved red light running.

Houston-Galveston Area Council data indicate that red light accidents in the Houston area account for approximately $225 million per year in total comprehensive cost.

The City of Houston is committed to the safety of the community and dedicated to reducing preventable collisions at signalized intersections. Every year, there are thousands of crashes that occur due to motorists running red lights in Houston.

The City’s Red Light Camera Enforcement Safety Program uses state-of-the-art digital camera and detection systems installed at some of Houston’s most dangerous intersections for the purpose of decreasing the number of red light runners and reducing collisions."

Yahoo Ad Comes Months Too Late

I'm sure six months ago, this ad would have sold domain hosting like hot cakes; only one small problem: much like every other market in America, the gasoline market began crashing several months ago and is now down to almost historically low levels across the nation. If you've been looking for a prime example of how the bureaucratic yellow tape within large corporations causes marketing faux pas, look no further than the screenshot below. As far as the ad itself, truth be told, I checked into the "$1.99 for the first year" offer back when I purchased my domains (winmillionsfree.com, freemillionsonline.com, and winfreemillions.com) and I think I settled on a different phrasing of the same option (around $7.something per year for 2 years I think). There was also a "first year free" I think, but all the marketing ploys came out to the same price in the end.

I ran into similar situations when I worked for AFLAC several years ago. Granted, they are an insurance (a treacherous area for marketing) company and are therefore held to stricter standards, advertisement wise, but that's not the only reason. AFLAC also has to monitor its ads closely because they use weakly-trained "independent representatives" to sell most of their policies, but I digress. If you were selling AFLAC and wanted to print your own flier, you had to submit it to the corporate marketing department and the average approval (or denial, in most cases) took anywhere from six months to a year. Good luck getting a solid campaign off the ground if it had anything to do with the timing of an event, unless it was more than a year away and you were an amazing planner!

So back to Yahoo: personally, I can't think of any real reason an internet company would let something like this happen, unless of course, they had just gotten too big for their own good.

Moral of the story, enjoy the fact that you're not a humongous corporation and have the ability to keep your ads updated with fresh releases anytime you want. I hope we're all able to see the beauty in their laughably-ineffective, marketing mishap.

They make deals with software companies to give everyone free copies of programs you'd normally have to pay for! Is Gexa Energy Price Gouging?

The first of this month (April 2009) my roommate received a letter from Gexa informing him that their web security was compromised and that his information was made available to whoever hacked in. I'm assuming they tracked someone down who they suspect initiated the breach, because they continued that they were currently in the process of indicting the party responsible...

I long ago warned him about how shoddy that company is, so all I can say now is "I told you so."

And if so, who do I contact?

**WARNING** - This is a particularly lengthy rant, so I'll summarize with bullet points at the end, in case you're not in a reading mood right now. That way, you can come back and catch up on all the mushy details some other time.

So it begins...

I've never been real happy with our electric provider, but recently things have gotten out of hand. I'm renting the spare room of a condo from a friend, so all the bills are in his name. He's been with Gexa Energy for his electric provider since he moved in, and possibly before that (he seems pretty loyal, even though the company has been bending us over, the last couple of months).

Which leads me to this scenario, and why I believe Gexa might be gouging:

When I had electricity in my own name in the past, I never saw more than a cent raise in "per kilowatt hour" charges over the span of any single billing period (possibly in the summer when the Texas heat is unbearable without air conditioning, so at least it would be an understandable increase), but the last three billing periods with Gexa Electric have shown an average 2 cents per billing period rise to the current 21.something cents per KWH!

Besides not wanting to pay an extra $100 a month for electricity, the falling gas prices got me to thinking that maybe something isn't right with this electrical price spike that's been occurring.

Three months ago (after the first few cent increases), I sent my roommate a link to http://powertochoose.org so that he could find a cheaper electricity provider, Texas is deregulated after all, and no one should pay more than they have to for electric services. He brushed it off saying he didn't see any companies with prices cheaper than what he was paying, or they weren't fixed/guaranteed prices, blah blah blah, etc... etc...; even though I specifically saw prices that were 4 cents/KWH cheaper than what we were paying at the time, I figured he didn't want to switch because of the hassle and possible fees related, so I understood and didn't press the issue.

Recently I did a quick search to figure out if there were potential coal sourcing issues (maybe somalian pirate ship hijacking concerns), causing the facilities burning it all, to need a couple extra hundred million dollars every month (21c/KWH x 2000 KWH/residence x minimum of 1 million customers), however, I found (not suprisingly) that the price of most American-based coal commodities has actually decreased over the last few months. Add to that, the recently reported 1 percent drop in consumer prices over the last month, and this skyrocketing electric cost just doesn't add up!!

I finally confronted the roommate again two nights ago and discussed switching providers again. I then followed up by sending him a link to http://houstonconsumerchoice.com (I couldn't remember the link I'd sent him previously and only discovered it after I perused my IM message archive), showing him specifically where to click to sign up for service with a fixed rate of 13.9 c/KWH, which is even derived from GREEN/RENEWABLE energy sources (typically a higher rate but better for the environment and green/renewable research & development). A 30% savings every month, fixed for a year, AND good for the planet!?!? I was flabbergasted!

And then it gets crazy. Instead of switching providers (showing that no-good-for-nothing gouging company that you're upset about how much you've been padding their executives' pockets), through some chain of events, my roommate has now signed up for a renewable resource plan from GEXA (to be furthermore known as the gouging devil incarnate), for 13 c/KWH!!

Any company which charges a steadily increasing rate of 30% over what they offer on a standard fixed-rate package (from what I understand, this is not a special deal of any sort), blows a red flag right into the stratosphere and screams price rape, in my humble opinion anyway (you can make your own decision).

In summary:
* Gexa has raised its c/KWH rate over 4 cents in the last two months (approx 1 c/month prior)
* Coal prices have actually decreased in recent months (coal being the number 1 energy source for electric plants)
* Gexa has fixed-rate plans offering prices 30% lower (not special introductory rates)
* Price gouging (to my understanding) is offering a service at a much inflated rate, when you can (and DO) obviously offer the same service for a much cheaper (reasonable and fair) price

So please, if you read all that, and you think the same way I do, AND you have a viable solution involving a way to punish Gexa and possibly get credited back some of the over-payments, I'd really love to hear from you!

How Do I Get Traffic To My Site?

Maybe you've been asking yourself (or others), "How can I let people know about my new contest?" or "How do I get traffic to my site, period?" or for those who learn by example "How do YOU get traffic to YOUR sites?" I hope you've gotten some good responses, but you probably haven't, or you wouldn't still be reading. Well, there are some very good ways out there, and you know I'm all about the free, so here's my advice (also free). Traffic Exchanges. Very simple concept, but used with a twist (stay tuned below for that tidbit). Here are the sites I'm currently an active member of, illustrated with banners (for the visually-stimulated) and explained using Pros/Cons lists (for the logically-minded):

Pros: decent timer, lottery ticket for every 8 pages, chance to win real cash, additional bonuses, credits for reporting sites that break the rules, nice upgrade price
Cons: ratio is a little low without upgrading to pro so you wind up promoting banners more than sites

Pros: decent timer, nice visual surfing interface, addictive prizebar, chance to win real cash, nice upgrade offers if you catch them, additional ways to earn credits other than just surfing, great quotes and/or helpful advice at the bottom of every page
Cons: new front-page GUI makes site-navigation less user-friendly, text ad feature has yet to work in a manner that makes using text ads worthwhile (show too fast so that credits are quickly diminished)

Pros: earn real cash while surfing, poker game for chance at bonus credits, can choose target or exclusion countries for your ads, homepage text ads option gets great results and is a cheap bargain, super-cheap upgrade price ($10 for 3 months)
Cons: can be painfully slow, high timer, had trouble at first with the poker game not crediting correctly, limited audience

Pros: fantastic user base to advertise to (over 90,000!), earn real cash while surfing, attractive site overall, new bonus pages in rotation, ongoing competitions, good ratio
Cons: so-so timer, anti-cheat mechanism can be annoying (match the gibberish word or do a math problem), bonus pages can easily be missed if you're not paying attention

Pros: best real-cash ratio, large bag of free credits just for signing up, great banner/text credit conversion ratios
Cons: so-so timer, site navigation can be confusing, sidebar text ad monitor not working, site has been completely down a couple times

Pros: speedy fast timer, lots of blatant bonus pages (every 15th), decent upgrade offers if you catch them, easy sidebar site navigation, ongoing daily credit contests, part of super-surf network (addtl credits for surfing specific other TE's at the same time), great surfer base/lots of members to advertise to
Cons: *warning - side rant* They post your login/password in every email they send. I contacted them about this procedure and their only response is that it produces more logins/surfers daily, and it may in fact, however, I think it's unsafe to have your password posted in plain text so often (especially if you use computers in public places), so I changed mine to a random password that I don't use for anything else, and I don't have to worry about forgetting what it is because I see it every time I read an email from them (usually daily). *end rant* ratio is a little low lending to using banners more than sites

Well, there you have it, my traffic story. The order they are listed above is how I open them, and I surf them all simultaneously. In firefox, I have them each bookmarked in a single folder and just click "open all in tabs." I move down the line, using the faster timers (trafficsplash, freetrafficlotto, trafficbunnies) to fill in the gaps. In a couple hours on a weekend, I can build enough credits to have my sites and banners seen throughout the rest of the week while I work my day job (hopefully one day able to quit because my internet marketing has taken off so wildly!).

These are, however, in no way a Top 5 (or even 6), they are just the ones I use because they work well and provide me with the service I need. I've been very tempted lately to try a couple of the other larger networks out there, just to see something new - I'll keep you posted and let you know if/when I do.

Heads Up - This post has absolutely nothing to do with a Redneck's Tooth, although I bet I've posted pictures of some before - OR - the site I'm going to mention probably has some!

I haven't been able to work lately because of the after-effects of Hurricane Ike, and for some reason, my roommate's proxy setup is filtering traffic such that I can't connect to hostmonster to work on my websites, so I have quite a bit of free time to surf the net and find WEIRD and INTERESTING stuff!

WEIRD - My gallery for Tardigrades, also known as "moss piglets" or "water bears." They can survive almost anything - super resilient creatures!

INTERESTING - A post about Socotra Island - quite possibly the oddest landscape on Earth. Great pictures and interesting factoids about the place you have to "see to believe!" It really does look like a scene right out of a Dr. Seuss book.

It's been a while since I've posted an email I've received, so today is your lucky Friday!

A public school teacher was arrested today at John F. Kennedy
International Airport as he attempted to board a flight while in
possession of a ruler, a protractor, a set square, a slide rule, and a
calculator. At a morning press conference, the Attorney General said
he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement.
He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the FBI with
carrying weapons of math instruction.

'Al-Gebra is a problem for us,' the Attorney General said. 'They
desire solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on
tangents in search of absolute values. They use secret code names
like 'x' and 'y' and refer to themselves as 'unknowns,' but we have
determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval
with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles
used to say, 'There are 3 sides to every triangle'.''

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, 'If God had
wanted us to have better Weapons of Math Instruction, he would have
given us more fingers and toes.' Republican leaders told reporters
they could not recall a more intelligent or profound statement by the
President.
